Dior: Galliano just won't do |
Less than a month ago newspapers across the globe published stories claiming that the Dior head designer had hurled antisemitic and rasist comments at a couple in a bar in Paris. Having denied blindly, a video emerged a couple of days later showing Galliano insulting two women including a statement saying that all "jews should have been gassed" and that he loved Hitler.
My first thought was, wow those are really harsh words, how the heck will he get out of it? Even though he was drunk and probably high on something (which is stressed dearly by his lawyer) one doesn't simply blurt out that they love Hitler if so isn't the case, after having a couple of bottles of wine or a snort. Obviously these were his actual personal opinions.
I was kind of smiley-face about it because we know the fashion industry is a shady business with big headed and surely slightly Nazi people, it's not a secret. So when one of the big fishes were caught I thought now those high flying egos were going to be drawn back to the ground (at least a little).
But after Dior announced that they sacked Galliano and that his own label would eventually be axed, I realized this was actually dead serious business.
Having admired Galliano's collections for years, I suddenly felt Dior was overreacting. Whoever thinks Nazism died with the Hitler has to have a serious reality check. Nobody sincerely believes we're living in a Nazism free society, do they? There ought to be tons of people blurting out anti-semitic comments every other day. So why didn't they just throw him into rehab and surely after 6 months it'll all be forgotten since we all probably will be talking about Kate Middleton being pregnant or something. Why the sack?
It just shows how crucial a brand image is for a company, especially a fashion company. The brand is paramount, it has to be spotless. Nobody wants to wear 'a Nazi'.
Sincerely,
Tiffany
