My big debut -or not

Hey, she's not dead!

Almost. So I've got no more hand ins or assignments before Easter break now -super big yeay! And again I'm quite bummed out because I'm not going back home, but on the bright side it's always nice being in London when you actually have time to BE in London but what's more my sister and brother is coming over for the break!

So the last 2 weeks have been quite eventful including an extremely awkward encounter with a man on a motorbike, having a heated conversation about Eric Saade at Pizza Express, having a wonderful M&S cheese cake at Regents park and another insanely stressful publication day. But the most remarkable (or I actually don't think it beats the Eric Saade thing but anyway) must have been going to an award show hosted by the magazine I interned at.

I've been preparing for the awards for more than a month - meaning I wrote the winners supplement.Writing about companies rebranding strategies week after week is intense I tell you, very intense. Anywho, of course I had absolutely nothing appropriate to wear. So I had to go and buy a dress literally 2 hours before the award. Just imagine a crazy person storming into H&M and buying the first best black dress she could find without trying it - that was me.

The awards was definitely something of its own. As Tiffany was being Tiffany, I was of course completely utterly out of place. I was surrounded by 300+ (!!) people in fancy suits and dresses. Although most of them were young (probably freshly off uni), I just felt like child at your parents' dinner party, or make that the baby at your parent's diner party. I wouldn't say a word, without thoroughly going through it 100 times in my head before so I wouldn't make a complete fool out of myself. There I let a brilliant networking opportunity pass by right in front of my nose. I'm intelligent am I?

So my internship at Communicate magazine is over. Have to say that I learnt a lot and if I ever crash and burn I could always write about corporate communication. Not to mention I actually have something in PRINT! Incredible.

Corporate communication and stuffs

I'm back in Sweden for a couple of days to celebrate the Chinese new year with my family. I'll probably be quite busy with all the Chinese hoohah, meeting friends and the Les Mis stuff me and my sis does, so I won't blog much (hem, not that I do otherwise).

Anyway, so yesterday was my first "real" in office internship day. It was interesting. They're a really small company (actually so small we were a total of 5 people in the office) and on the phone slash laptop non stop. Well I guess that's the working world now, isn't it?

So what did the intern do? Well, she got a intimitading first assignment, which was writing up a news story about a company which did theirr first live webchat for their investors (you know great stuffs). It wasn't that bad, you might think. After I was finished with the first draft of the article they told me it would be better if I got real quotes from the CEO person instead of taking quotes from the article (which my article was based on). I was like, so I need to contact him.......in person? (Heart going 1000 beats per second)

Luckily I didn't have to interview him throught he phone however I had to call the switchboard and ask for his email, which was heavy stuff too. But it went well (I think) and my article was published later that day.

A conference girl

So here's the evidence that I'm actually important. I had my own freaking badge. It was awesome, you should try it sometimes. ;)

I have to say it all went well, no major funny looks or feeling out of place. I mostly sat at the reception greeting people, giving them their badge and a program, almost exclusively to guys in suits with their blackberry glued to their ears. Except for that one that was more interested in the plate with cakes than making calls.

Anywho, in terms of the people I'll be working with, I'm still a bit daunted. And there's a whole lot of "Emily" factors included in that. (Ahem) but I think it's going to be ok once I get to know them better (convincing myself).

I'm going back in 2 weeks time. It's gonan be exciting to see how I'll manage without the help from the previous intern. Gulp.

The Editorial assistant

I'm delighted to say that I have landed an internship!  It's for a small corporate communication magazine (you know very interesting stuff). Politically correct I'll be the "editorial assistant" (fancy isn't it?) and will basically do a lot of research and just help out with whatever. Still, I'm quite excited (actually bursting with excitment).

The interview went well, i.e I didn't embarrass myself, execpt for the awkward moment when the interview guy (magazine's publisher) found a dead insect in his coffee. And ebfore I knew I was invited to come along the upcoming week.

Tomorrow will be my first day and I'm going to help out at a conference they're holding in Russel Hotel. Formal dressing will be required, which will be fairly interesting since nothing in my wardrobe is particularly formal. With any luck I might not make a total fool out of myself tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
